New way of detecting gamma radiation

Researchers at Northwestern University designed new materials that can detect gamma rays and X-rays. For this use they had to design heavy materials that doesn’t have a lot of electrons. They chose for a semiconductor material with a crystalline structure that immobilises the electrons.

Once optimised they could be used in handheld detection devices to locate nuclear weapons.
